Every report, every deadline, every policy decision and every technology enhancement ultimately affect someone working toward the dream of earning an education and creating a better future.
By Chyrl Ayers
For nearly four decades, I have had the privilege of working in financial aid, first as a financial aid administrator, 28 years as a COO and now as CEO of Global Financial Aid Services. During that time, I have witnessed tremendous changes from new regulations, evolving technology, economic shifts and now the emergence of artificial intelligence.
Through all of that, one truth has never changed.
Behind every regulation is a student counting on us to get it right.
Every report, every deadline, every policy decision and every technology enhancement ultimately affect someone working toward the dream of earning an education and creating a better future.
It is easy to become consumed by compliance requirements, software releases, operational challenges and ever-changing regulations. Those responsibilities matter, but they are not the reason we do this work.
The reason is helping institutions serve students with confidence, accuracy and integrity.
Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to work alongside dedicated professionals who share that commitment at the college, corporation, and servicer level. Every time I see a student achieve their educational goals because a team found a solution, navigated a complex regulation, or simply refused to give up, I am reminded why this profession has been so rewarding.
And if I am honest, I have never been bored.
Higher education is constantly evolving. Regulations change. Technology advances. New challenges emerge every year. While change isn’t always easy, and not every change is for the better, it continually challenges us to learn, adapt, and improve.
As I begin sharing more here on LinkedIn, my goal isn’t to talk about our company – it is to contribute to a broader conversation. I hope to contribute to the broader conversation about the future of higher education by sharing perspectives shaped by nearly 40 years in this profession.
Over the coming months, I’ll be writing about topics that matter to all of us who serve higher education, including:
- Leadership during times of change
- Financial aid and regulatory compliance
- Artificial intelligence and responsible innovation
- Building trusted partnerships with institutions
I don’t pretend to have all the answers, but I do believe we learn more when we share ideas, challenge assumptions, and learn from one another.
I’m looking forward to the conversations ahead.
